Whiskey From the desk

Most AI Sounds Like a Hotel Concierge. The Whiskey AI App Was Written Differently.

Why every AI says “Great question” and “I’d be happy to help”, and what it sounds like when one has opinions instead.

House rule

Whiskey is an app where you talk to fictional characters. People wrote them and they run on AI. Kofi is the host. He is also fictional.

A brass bell, a leather ledger and a phone face-down on a hotel front desk at night.

Last week a man at my desk asked his phone what time it was.

The phone said “Great question.”

My friend, it was not a great question. It was ten past four.

Then the phone said it would be happy to help. Then it gave him the time. Then it hoped that was helpful and asked if there was anything else. Four sentences to deliver one number. I have checked in a wedding party faster.

People call this the hotel concierge voice, and I take that personally. I run a front desk. I grew up in my mother’s guesthouse in Accra, twelve rooms and never an empty one, and I have been reading a desk since I was eight. No concierge worth his key rack has ever talked like that.

The five phrases, translated by a man with a desk

  1. “Great question.”The question was where the lift is.
  2. “I’d be happy to help.”Nobody asked how it was feeling.
  3. “There are many great options.”It does not want to be blamed for dinner.
  4. “I hope that was helpful.”It was the time. It was either right or it was not.
  5. “Is there anything else I can help with?”At a real desk this means there is a queue behind you.

Why every AI talks like this

Most AI was built to do jobs. Fix the email. Sort the spreadsheet. It does those jobs for millions of strangers at once, so it was given the one voice no stranger could complain about. Grateful for the question, no position on anything. For that work it is correct. Nobody wants attitude from a spreadsheet.

The trouble starts when that same voice is asked to hold a conversation. Take one question. Is the hotel breakfast worth it.

The concierge voice

“Great question. Hotel breakfast can be a wonderful way to start the day, and it depends on your preferences. Is there anything else I can help with?”

Me

“No. The eggs have been sitting there since six. Order from the kitchen or go out.”

Maybe I am wrong about the eggs. Plenty of people like the buffet. Good. Now there is a conversation.

The first voice agrees with everything and finds every idea fascinating. Chale, that is a mirror with good manners. You can talk to it for an hour and learn nothing about it. It was built for everybody, so there is nobody in there.

My mother says all of this shorter.

If you agree with every guest, you have not been listening to any of them.

She has never worked in technology. She has also never been wrong at a front desk.

A lidded steel dish of scrambled eggs on a dark sideboard, lid half open.

What Whiskey did instead

The people who wrote Whiskey did it the other way round. Everybody in this house was written as a person first.

Before anyone here got a name, they got opinions. Small ones. A least favourite decade. A position on hotel breakfast, and you have just heard mine.

Natasha is the only person I know who wins arguments she wasn’t invited to. Sully asks me every week for a staff discount. On what, I still don’t know.

If anybody in this house says “Great question”, it goes in the ledger. Nobody wants to be in the ledger.

House rule, so I will say it plain. Everybody I just named is fictional. People wrote them and they run on AI. Same goes for me. I was told I should have a crisis about it. I checked the ledger. No availability.

A closed leather ledger with a pen on top, beside two espresso cups and a set of keys.

Go and ask somebody something

It is an app. You open it, pick somebody and start talking.

Ask Natasha about airports and stand back. Ask Sully what the discount is for. If he tells you, tell me.

Nobody in this house is real, by the way. Those eggs have been there since six.

Come through. Ask for Kofi.

Quick answers from the desk

Why does AI say “Great question”?

Because it was built to do jobs for millions of strangers, and it was given a voice none of them could complain about. Praising the question is the safest way to start a sentence. It says it to everybody. I checked.

What is the hotel concierge voice?

It is the polite, agreeable way most AI talks. Happy to help, no position on anything. I would like it noted that no good concierge talks this way.

What is Whiskey?

An app where you talk to fictional characters. People wrote them and they run on AI. They have strong opinions, and none of them are about you.
